The St. Olaf womens hockey team faced off against Saint Marys University at the Northfield Ice Arena on Friday, February 20th. This conference game was the first of their two game series. The Oles came from behind but fell one goal short, with a score of 4-3.

In the first period the Oles and Cardinals played tough against each other. The Oles out-shot Saint Marys, 14-7, but did not put the puck past their goaltender. As St. Olaf skated into the first break they were still occupying a power play and the score remained 0-0.

Less than a minute into the second period, St. Olafs power play scored, to take the lead. Lindsay Weier (So., Menomonie, Wis.) scored down low off a pass from Kate Barnett (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.) and Sarah Ray (Sr., St. Paul, Minn.). Less than a minute later the Cardinals came back and scored, to tie it up at one goal apiece. They went on to score two more, one of which was on a power play.

As the period was winding down, St. Olaf had another power play opportunity. Ray ripped a shot from the point to bring the Oles within one point to tie up the game. Erin Baxter (Jr., Rosemount, Minn.) screened the Cardinals goaltender as Barnett and Brit Schultheis (Jr., Shoreview, Minn.) worked the puck to Ray. That action wrapped up the second period as the Oles skated into the third trailing by one goal.

Twenty-seven seconds into the first period Saint Marys came out and scored, to take a lead of 4-2. Later in the period they scored again sneaking past the Ole defense. Kelsey Skogland (Fr., Shakopee, Minn.) fired a shot from the blue line into the upper right corner of the Cardinals net, from an assist of Schultheis. The Oles were only down by two now and in the last minutes of play they pulled goaltender, Andrea Smith (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.). With six players on the ice the Oles forced the puck past Saint Marys defense to bring the Oles within one goal of the tie. This was Weiers second goal of the game. The assists came off the sticks of Baxter and Ray. With only twelve seconds left on the clock, the Oles managed to get another chance to tie up the game.

The Oles are now 9-6-0 in the MIAC and 11-9-2 overall. St. Olaf plays Saint Marys again on Saturday, February 21st at the Saint Marys Ice Arena. The action starts at 2:00 p.m.
