River Falls tops women's hockey

St. Olaf played the University of Wisconsin-River Falls in a non-conference game on Wednesday, February 18th. The Oles played with energy, high intensity, and strong offense and defense but were defeated by River Falls, 3-1.

Early in the first period both teams received penalties and River Falls scored during this time to take a 1-0 lead. St. Olaf battled back and during the last minute of the period, the puck did not leave their offensive zone.

As the Oles skated into the second break they were carrying the momentum of the game, but down by one goal. Within five minutes of the second period St. Olaf found themselves with a power play opportunity. The play started with Kate Barnett (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.) working the puck down to Brit Schultheis (Jr., Shoreview, Minn.), who took a hard shot as Lindsay Weier (So., Menomonie, Wis.) scored off the rebound to tie the game up, 1-1. Towards the end of the second period, River Falls scored one more time to give them a lead of 2-1 going into the third period.

With twenty minutes left in the game, St. Olaf played harder than they had all game. River Falls ended up scoring one more time. With about one minute left on the clock, the Oles pulled Smith from the net. They created several good scoring opportunities but fell short as the buzzer sounded.

Since it was a non-conference game, St. Olaf's goaltenders split time in the net. Ten minutes into the second period Andrea Smith (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.) exchanging places with Kerry Rollwagen (Jr., Mendota Heights, Minn.). Rollwagen played great the first half and recorded 20 saves.

St. Olaf is now 9-5-0 in MIAC standings and 11-8-2 over all. The Oles face off again on Friday, February 20th at the Northfield Ice Arena against Saint Mary's University. The action starts at 5:00 p.m.
