Women's hockey falls to Concordia, playoff hopes still alive
February 28, 2004
On Friday, February 27, the St. Olaf womens hockey team fell to Concordia College. It was a heartbreaker, the Oles were up 4-1 skating into the third period and the Cobbers came back to win 5-4.
In the first period, both teams went back and forth with offense and defensive play. St. Olafs, Kendra Ruff (So., Willmar, Minn.) scored her first goal as an Ole and the first goal of the game. Lindsay Weier (So., Menomonie, Wis.) skated the puck into the Cobbers territory and passed the puck to Ruff, who one timed it past Concordias goaltender. The Oles held onto their lead until the last second of the first period, when the Cobbers scored on the buzzer, to take a 1-1 tie into the first break.
In the second period, St. Olaf controlled the play. Erin Baxter scored the second goal for the Oles off a pass from the Kate Barnett (Jr.-C, Burnsville, Minn.) and Sarah Ray (Sr.-C, St. Paul, Minn.). About three minutes later this line combination scored again as Maria Richardson (Fr., New Brighton, Minn.) picked up the rebound from Baxter and Ray. Less than a minute later they scored again. Baxter had her second goal of the game. The play started with Richardson and Ray. The Oles now had a 4-1 lead as the second period wrapped up.
Less than a minute into the third period Concordia scored their second goal of the game, making it 4-2 in St. Olafs favor. Throughout the rest of the period, the Oles lead grew smaller as the Cobbers went on to score two more goals to tie up the game. A little over half way through the period Concordia pulled ahead and took a 5-4 lead. The Oles fought back to tie up the game. They pulled their goaltender in the last few minutes, but were unsuccessful. It was a frustrating day for the St. Olaf womens hockey team.
The Oles are now 10-7-0 in MIAC standings and 13-10-2 overall. They compete against the Concordia Cobbers in the second game of their series on Saturday, February 28 at the Northfield Ice Arena. The battle begins at 2:00 p.m.
