Nordic Ski team finishes second at MIAC Championship
February 24, 2004
The St. Olaf Nordic Ski team raced in the MIAC Championship on February 21st and 22nd. It was a warm weekend and the snow was fast. The Olaf women did well against the favored Gustavus squad putting Linn Dale (FY, Bloomington, Minn.) in third place to make the all conference team. Mia Gaw (FY, Carbondale, Minn.) placed eighth and Stephanie Block (FY, Minnetonka, Minn.) placed 12th.
After a week of resting up, the men did well placing Nate Erlandson (So., Grand Rapids, Minn.) in fifth place and Ollie Garrison (So., Boxborough, Mass.) in sixth, both making the conference team.
It was a tough day for waxing with off and on snow flurries. After a slow start for everybody, Garrison of St. Olaf took the lead and kept it for 5K until being passed by his pursuer Erich Ziegler of Gustavus. Ziegler ended up winning the race and Garrison held on to second place beating out Gustavus Andy Rishavy at the finish. Erlandson had a great classical race as he took eighth place and second place for the team.
Right from the start, Mary Krusen (So., Kenai, Alaska) and Gaw took the lead, with Block and Dale right behind them. Krusen and Gaw took first and second place respectively. Block and Dale finished fourth and fifth as Olaf beat Gustavus for the day with a huge upset.
