Women's soccer struggle at Augsburg
November 1, 2003
The St. Olaf women's soccer team struggled against unfavorable conditions and lost a disappointing game to Augsburg College 2-0 on Wednesday, October 29th.
All year the Oles have struggled on the road with an away record of only 3-7-0. When they took on Augsburg on the road this week, they continued the trend that has haunted them all year. Augsburg plays on an artificial surface rarely used for soccer anymore. In fact, this surface is going to be removed in the next couple of years and be replaced by a more grass-like artificial turf. But this will not help the 2003 Oles, who fell 2-0 to Augsburg in the second to last game of the Oles' season.
Augsburg scored in the 22nd minute on a shot from about 30 yards out which skidded and slid past the Oles' keeper. The two teams both struggled with the slippery surface made even more of a challenge by the constant downpour of a mixture of rain, sleet, hail, and snow. Augsburg increased their lead to two in the 78th minute. The Oles were never really able to find their footing to put a goal past Augsburg though the game was played pretty evenly throughout. St. Olaf had 12 shots on goal while Augsburg had 16.
This loss drops the Oles overall record to an even .500 record of 8-8-1 and takes their conference record to 5-4-1. The Oles take on their final opponent on Saturday, November 1st at 11am. They will be playing their cross-town rivals, Carleton College, with the Knights having the home field advantage.
