Oles lose finale to Carleton and miss playoffs

The Oles had a chance to clinch a berth in the MIAC playoffs with a win at home against Carleton on Saturday, but failed to do so with a dissapointing 1-0 loss in what proved to be the last game of their season. The Oles missed a spot in the MIAC playoffs by a margin of one game to the University of St. Thomas.

Carleton scored the only goal of the game when forward Yemi Adegunju backheeled an errant shot past keeper Kyle Trimble in the 23rd minute. Starting sweeper Andrew Gastineau (FY, Rochester, MN) was injured on the play, and did not return to the game. Both teams played excellent defense, holding each other to very few scoring opportunites. Making the task of beating a good Carleton defense even tougher, the Oles played the first half without leading scorer Faiz Abdirahman (So., Rochester, MN), who was sitting out with a pulled hamstring. Abdirahman played the second half out of necessity, not close to full strength. There was no scoring in the second half, and the game ended 1-0 in favor of cross-town-rival Carleton.

It was the last game in the stellar careers of Oles Mark Gilmer (Sr., Bloomington, MN), Chris Gangl (Sr., Lakeville, MN), Brian Lande (Sr., Muscatine, IO), and Eric Steege (Sr., Madison, WI). The Oles finished their 2003 season with a record of 7-9-2 overall, and 6-4 in MIAC conference play (5th place).
