Cross-Country men take third at MIAC Championships

Coach Bill Thornton often reminds the Ole men's cross-country team in September and October that "it's what you do in November that makes them remember." The Ole harriers took this motto to heart as they ran in the MIAC Conference Championships on Saturday at Como Park Golf Course in St. Paul.

The Ole men's cross country team ran in the MIAC Conference Championships on Saturday at Como Park Golf Course in St. Paul. Running on the first day of November, the men's team finished in third place, in a tightly contested meet, where St. Thomas was crowned champion for the third time in four years, with a score of 42 points. The Knights from Carleton, the defending champions, finished a close second with 56 points. The Ole men finished only 10 points behind Carleton, with 66 points.

Kelly Fulton (Jr., Billings, Mont.) once again led the Oles, blazing across the hilly course in 25:52 to finish in 3rd place. Sam Hauck (So., Shoreview, Minn.) had a tremendous race to finish 5th in 26:04 and was closely followed by Malcolm Richards (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn.) who placed 7th place with his time of 26:09. All three runners were All-MIAC finishers, while Peder Arneson (Sr., Montevideo, Minn.) finished in 20th place for an All-MIAC honorable mention spot. Jesse Horst (So., Minneapolis, Minn.) stepped up his racing to close out the scoring places for the Ole men by finishing in 31st place.

The Ole harriers will have two weeks to train and taper until the Regional Meet in Grinnell, Iowa that will decide National qualifying teams and individuals. The race will provide an even stiffer test for the Oles, for they most likely will need to defeat both St. Thomas and Carleton to have a chance at making it to Nationals. The JV team will close out their season this Thursday, Nov. 6 at the prestigious Karhu Shoe Race, a dual meet with Carleton's JV.
