Ole swimmers return to water in first meet of season
November 10, 2003
The St. Olaf women's and men?s swim teams traveled to St. Peter on November 7 to compete against MIAC rival, Gustavus Adolphus College. From the very start of the meet, the energy in the atmosphere excited and inspired swimmers to great races and fast swims. The women finished second to Gustavus with a score of 125-118, while the men finished first with a score of 134-109.
?I don?t think that I have ever seen a meet with so many close races? stated Joe Anderson (FY), who set a pool record in both the 500 and 1000 freestyle. The Gusties started off strong winning both the women?s and men?s 400 medley relays by just under two seconds in both races. But the Oles came back strong dominating the 1000 and 200 freestyle. The meet proceeded to go back and forth as the rivals contended for the win.
Key performances on the women?s team from Carly Knoell (1000 freestyle, 200 backstroke), Kelly Dolan (200 freestyle, 500 freestyle), Katie Detwiler (200 IM, 200 butterfly) and Anne Lindberg (1000 freestyle) brought the score to a tie towards the end of the meet. After strong diving performances led by Colin Cunningham, who posted winning scores in both the one meter and three meter, the meet came down to a tie with two events remaining. Coming down to the 400 freestyle relay, the Oles swam their hearts out and the relay of Katie Blum, Emily Love, Mikayla Meyer and Katie Brentz was just barely out-touched by the Gusties, leading to a final score of 125-118. The men pulled out a 134-109 win over the Gusties, showing the strength of their first year class with inspiring swims from Andy Tompsett (200 butterfly), Tom Kukla (200 backstroke), Joe Anderson (1000 freestyle, 500 freestyle), and Adam Thomas (200 freestyle, 500 freestyle). Mark Glineburg (SO), who broke the 200 IM pool record yet taking second in the event.
The divers were a driving force, dominating the Gusties in both one and three meter events with Christian Lorentzen winning both the one and three meter events. The Ole men also had dominating swims from Mark Glineburg (200 IM, 200 breaststroke) and both medley and free relays.
The next meet is Saturday, November 15 when the Oles will host a quad meet with Carleton, Saint John's, College of Saint Benedict, and Macalester at the St. Olaf pool at 11:00 a.m.
