November 9, 2003
On Friday, November 8th, the Womens Hockey Team traveled to Eau Claire, Wisconsin. It was their first game of the season. This was a non-conference game that ended in a 2-2 tie.
In the first period the Oles fell behind early. Shortly after the Oles came back with a beautiful power play goal. Maria Richardson (Fr., New Brighton, Minn.) scored the first goal of the season. Her goal was assisted by Brittany Schultheis (Jr., Shoreview, Minn.). With eleven minutes left in the first period Eau Claire scored again to take the lead.
In the second period Eau Claire held the lead at 2-1. The Oles played hard this period. Sarah Ray (Sr.-C, St. Paul, Minn.) had a checking penalty. The Oles power play and penalty kill worked well throughout the whole game. The Oles had two power play chances in the second period but the puck didnt quite cross the line to tie up the game. In the third period the Oles came out flying. The score was still 2-1 in favor of Eau Claire. Kelsey Skogland (Fr., Shokopee, Minn.) received a hooking penalty late in the third. During the penalty kill Kate Barnett (Jr.-C, Burnsville, Minn.) had a breakaway off of a perfect pass from Erin Baxter (Jr., Bloomington, Minn.). Barnett found herself all alone against the goalie. She ripped a wrist shot into the upper right hand corner to tie up the game. The Oles finished off the game strong. The period ended with a 2-2 tie. Eau Claire and St. Olaf played a five minute sudden death over time. Both teams played hard and the final score was 2-2. The Oles next contest is Saturday, November 9th in Eau Claire.
