Pavelko, Tobias star as Baseball sweeps to playoffs

Joe Pavelko (Jr., Richfield, Minn.) was 5-for-7 and Eric Tobias had a complete game victory in game one (FY, Prescott, Wis.) as the St. Olaf baseball team swept Saint John's University 3-2 and 12-6 Thursday afternoon at Mark Almli Field.
With the sweep, the Oles qualified for the MIAC Tournament which begins next weekend in Northfield and Dundas.
In game one, St. Olaf came back after Saint John's took a 2-0 lead in the fifth. Pavelko then doubled in a run in the bottom half of the inning to cut the advantage to 2-1. Then, in the sixth, Dan Norsten (Jr., Eagan, Minn.) tripled in a run and then scored on a two-out infield single by Jon Cornell (Sr., Eden Prarie, Minn.).
Tobias struck out the side in the seventh to secure the win. Tobias scattered six hits and struck out seven.
In game two, St. Olaf amassed 14 hits in the first three innings to gain an 11-0 lead. Pavelko was 3-for-5, Jeff Hudson (FY, Northfield, Minn.) 3-for-4 and Mike Ludwig (Sr., Blaine, Minn.) 2-for-4 with five RBI's to lead the attack.
Jeff Jasperson (Jr., Duluth, Minn.) got the win, working 4 2/3 innings.
The Oles will play Carleton at home Saturday in a tuneup for the MIAC Tournament at 1 p.m. Next Friday, St. Olaf will open tournament play at Sechlar Park in Northfield as either the #2 or #3 seed in the Tourney.
