Oles win MIAC tourney to advance to NCAA tournament
May 10, 2003
The St. Olaf baseball team entered the MIAC Championship game Saturday afternoon as the #2 seed against #4 seed Saint John's University. In the championship game, the Oles defeated the Johnnies 4-3 in a game that saw two 30-plus minute weather delays. The Johnnies attempt to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth inning came up short as SJU's Mike Zauhar was tagged out sliding into home.
The Oles were led by senior first baseman Mike Ludwig (Blaine, Minn.) who had five at bats with four hits, one run, and one RBI. Also contributing to the Ole scoring was third baseman Dan Norsten (Jr., Eagan,Minn.), with five at bats, one hit, one run, and one RBI. The winning pitcher for the Oles was Jon Haugen (Jr. Mahtomedi, Minn.), who pitched five innings before being relieved by Jeff Jasperson (Jr., Duluth, Minn.) who went three innings before Charlie Ruud (Jr., Cannon Falls, Minn.) came in to earn the save in the ninth inning.
With the win, St. Olaf receives the MIAC's automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. This is the first year St. Olaf has won the MIAC baseball tournament in its four year history. The Oles are currently 26-12 overall for the season.
