The St. Olaf baseball team will open NCAA regional play Thursday at 11:30 a.m. in Oshkosh, Wis. against UW-Whitewater (33-7). The Oles, who recieved an automatic bid after winning the MIAC tournament, are the only MIAC team in the 42-team field.

It is the 16th overall (15-30), and first bid in three seasons for St. Olaf, who won the last three MIAC regular season titles but fell in the league's tournament championship game. The Oles recieved an at-large bid in the 2000 season when they won a school record 36 games.

St. Olaf and Whitewater have two common opponents this season; Bethel and the region's no. 2 seed UW-Oshkosh. Each swept the Royals, while Whitewater was 3-3 against Oshkosh, and the Oles were swept by the Titans in late March.

Ripon (32-4) will face Oshkosh (33-6) in the other first round game in the four-team region at 3 p.m. Each recieved at-large bids after falling in their tournament championship game. Only one other school, Christopher Newport (27-7), recieved an at-large bid.

St. Olaf enters the regional as one of the hottest teams in Division III. The Oles have won 20 of their last 22 games, including nine straight.
