Faculty members honored in spirit of Gertrude Hilleboe

By Carole Leigh Engblom
May 12, 2003

During her 40-plus years as a faculty member and dean of women (1915-58), Gertrude Hilleboe ?12 was well known for her individual interest in each student she encountered and for her dedication to the St. Olaf community.

In 1998, the Division of Student Life honored Hilleboe by establishing the Gertrude Hilleboe Award for faculty involvement in student life. It?s an opportunity to recognize faculty dedication to students, their commitment and involvement both inside and outside the classroom.

This year?s co-recipients are Bob Entenmann, a professor of history who has been a member of the faculty since 1982, and Mark Schelske, a professor of education and faculty member since 1987.

Entenmann?s nomination by a member of the Division of Student Life reads in part: "I know it means a lot to all . . . students when faculty attend their events. Since not many faculty do, I think Bob stands out in a quiet way just with his presence. He seems to really value diversity and backs it up by actually "being there" for the increasingly diverse St. Olaf student body. I admire Bob for his efforts to support these students."

Schelske?s nomination by a member of the Division of Student Life reads in part: "Mark has consistently been one of the most, if not THE most outspoken member of the faculty as it pertains to supporting and nurturing our multicultural students. Through his work in the Education Department, and with TRIO programs he has been a thoughtful and effective spokesperson for educational opportunity, often acting as the conscience of our better selves. He has also been successful at the very difficult task of linking our ?majority students? with multi-ethnic communities and programs?this has greatly impacted the support for diversity across racial divides and economic strata on campus."

Entenmann and Schelske will be presented with individual plaques on May 29; their names will also be placed on an additional plaque in the office of the Dean of Students.
