Mistakes spell Oles, Warhawks win opener 7-1
May 15, 2003
The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater capitalized on early St. Olaf mistakes, and defeated the Oles 7-1 in the first round of the NCAA Midwest Regional in Oshkosh, Wis. Thursday afternoon.
The loss ended a nine game winning streak for the Oles.
The Warhawks (34-7) scored three unearned runs in the first two innings off of St. Olaf starter Charlie Ruud (Jr., Cannon Falls, Minn.). The Oles didn't make a mark on the scoreboard until the seventh, when Joe Pavelko (Jr., Richfield, Minn.) hit a solo homerun to rightfield. Pavelko was 2-for-4.
UW-Whitewater had just seven hits. The Oles had six, stranding seven runners.
Jon Haugen (Jr., Mahtomedi, Minn.) and Jeff Jasperson (Jr., Duluth, Minn.) each pitched two scoreless innings in relief of Ruud.
The Oles will play Ripon College (32-4) Friday at 11:30 a.m.
