Swimming and diving team dominates over St. Catherine's
November 4, 2002
The St. Olaf women's swimming and diving team swam against the College of St. Catherine's this past Saturday, November 2nd. Even with out their male counterparts the women filled Skoglund pool with a high level of excitement and enthusiasm. The women easily won the meet with a final score of 154-77.
The Ole women competed well considering they came off an extremely tough week of practice. At this point of the season the Oles are more focused on their training in order to be ready for the championship meet in February. This meet was a great opportunity for the first year swimmers to demonstrate their abilities. First-years Kate Blum (Marshalltown, Iowa) and Emily Love (Kansas City, Mo.) both turned in wins for the Oles. Blum swam to an easy victory in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:02.36, while Love captured wins in the 50 and 100-yard freestyles with times of 25. 80 and 57.25, respectively. Carly Knoell (FY, Lincoln, Neb.), Lauren Haugen (FY, Faribault, Minn.), Hannah Berg (FY, Edina, Minn.) and Alisha Cowell (FY, Lakeville, Minn.) were also successful in their first dual meet performances as Ole women, placing in the top three in all of their events.
The motivation behind the performances of the first-year swimmers was in part due to the high standards set by the rest of the team. Katie Detwiler (SO, Fort Atkinson, Wisc.) picked up where she left off last year, with phenomenal swims. Detwiler turned in the fastest time in the 200-yard butterfly with an impressive in-season time of 2:15.39. Seniors Laura Schutt (Niles, Ill.), Anna Guenther (Minneapolis, Minn.), Jen Rasmusson (Salt Lake City, Utah), and Rachel Sattler (Madison, Wisc.) were also victorious in their efforts and turned in wins in the 1000-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard breaststroke, respectively. Rasmusson also captured the win in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:19.0. Distant swimmer Jenna Kubat (SO, Des Moines, Iowa) dominated the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:31.16, while Liz Hathaway (JR, Lincoln, Neb.) took care of the 200-IM with a winning time of 2:23. 91.
The Oles were also successful on the diving boards. Jen Williams (JR, Cambridge, Minn.) won the voluntary part of the 1-meter competition with a score of 134.00.
The Ole women look upon this meet as a warm up for this coming Friday, November 8th, when then take on conference rival Gustavus. This meet will be one of the most exciting and intense meets of the season. The Oles are looking for a win in their home pool after losing to the Gusties last year at both the dual meet and the conference meet.
Coach Bob Hauck feels confident in the women." It will require a total team effort, but I feel that this group of women, from top to bottom, have both the talent and competitiveness to make this a very exciting meet". The Ole men will also be competing at this meet.
