Men's cross country takes second at MIAC championship
November 6, 2002
Despite being overlooked as a contender for the conference title in the MIAC meet preview St. Olaf Men's Cross Country team raced within 13 points of conference champ and cross-town rival Carleton College. The Oles ran an incredible team race with all of the varsity finishing within a mere 50 seconds of each other and all but their seventh runner earning an All-MIAC or Honorable Mention awards.
This meant the Oles placed seven runners in the top 28. Leading the way for the Oles was Kelly Fulton (So, Billings, MT) in 5th place with a time of 26.15. He was followed closely by Robert Hillard (Sr, Colombia, MO - Hickman), Mark Sullivan (Sr. West Bend, WI - West), Christopher Coffey (Sr, Dubuque, IA - Senior) and Peder Arneson (Jr, Montevideo, MN) who packed up to finish 8th, 11th, 15th and 17th respectively for the scoring places. The back end of the Ole pack was comprised of Malcolm Richards (So, Minneapolis, MN - South) and Joel Tortomasi (Sr. Hartford, WI - Whitewater) who finished in 25th and 28th.
The Oles also saw great performances by Nic Reichenbach (Jr. Hasting, MN) who placed 48th and ran just under 28 minutes and was closely followed by Jason Havey (FY Colombia, MO - Hickman) in 68th and a time of 28.10.
The Oles JV will now focus on The Great Karhu Shoe Race and attempt to reclaim "The Shoes" which had resided at Manitou Heights for quite sometime until the tail-end of last season. The Oles will have to rely on great performances and the strength of their 8th through 15th runners if they plan on winning.
The meet will be on Thursday Nov. 7th and will take place in the Carleton College Arboretum. The starters pistol will fire near the Carleton Rec. Center at exactly 4:20pm.
