Oles end season with draw to cross-town rivals

It doesn?t matter which sport you play or what your record is, as an Ole, your game against Carleton is the biggest game of the year. This is the attitude that the St. Olaf women?s soccer team walked out onto the field with on November 9th. After two years of having to take on the Knights on their home turf, this year the game was played with the Oles having the home field advantage on Rolf Melby Field. This advantage may have warded off a loss but it wasn?t able to secure a win. The game ended in a double-overtime 0-0 tie.

The game included many chances by both teams, but neither team were ever able to finish. The Oles came in with a much-improved record from last year and were confident they could post a win. However, the game started slow for the Oles and they didn?t play the way that had earned them so many wins throughout the season. Once the game picked-up intensity, both teams saw the minutes quickly slip off the clock.

Both coaches made subs and tried to keep their teams fresh for what was beginning to look like a long game. The Oles had a slightly deeper bench, however, and made over twice as many substitutions as the Knights.

"The game was really frustrating because we were unlucky and couldn?t find the back of the net but it was a team we should have or at least could have beat. It just didn?t come together," said forward Kristi Parks (Jr, Plymouth, Minn.). Parks led the team with three shots. Emily Klamm (So, Mt. Prospect, Ill.), Jill Gauger (Sr, Bloomington, Minn.), and Becca Loerch (Sr, Apple Valley, Minn.) each had one shot on the game. The Oles? total of six shots fell just under the Knights? nine. The game against Carleton ended the Oles season. With a vast improvement from last year, the Oles finished their season with a 6-2-3 record in the conference, which put them in 4th place with 15 points. Their overall record was 10-4-4.
