Oles fall to Blugolds in Championship

Host UW-Eau Claire shot 53 percent from the field en route to a 79-58 win over St. Olaf in the Blugold Classic Championship in Eau Claire, Wis. Saturday night.
Tournament MVP Jason Larson had 22 point, seven assists and six rebounds to lead the Blugolds. Mike Ludwig (Sr., Blaine, Minn.) and Matt Schlenker (Jr., Rochester, Minn./Mayo) had 16 and 10 points to lead the Oles.
Eau-Claire led by just four at the half. The Blugolds raced to a ten-point lead minutes into the second frame on the heels of a 13-7 run. The Oles would not get closer than eight the rest of the way.
Ludwig and Kevin Jaunich (Sr., Delano, Minn.) were named to the All-Tournament team. Besides Larson, Andy Witte and Dan Archambault of Eau Claire were on the team as well.
St. Olaf reached the final with a win over Northland College 72-42. St. Olaf never trailed in the win, and head coach Dan Kosmoski emptied his entire bench. Ludwig had a game-high 21 points. Jaunich added 14 and Tim Nelson (Sr., Braham, Minn.) 11. Chris Clark (FY, Norwood, Minn./Norwood-Young America), Dane Huber (FY, Northfield, Minn.) and Pat Bass (Soph., Houston, Texas/Mpls. Roosevelt) each scored their first collegiate point in the win and Justin Bonestroo had a career-high six assists.
St. Olaf will host Luther College on Tuesday. The Norse were defeated by Gustavus Saturday 71-59. Tip-off is set for 7:30. The game is free of admission and can be heard on 920 AM, KDHL.
