The St. Olaf Women's Basketball team lost their season opener to Simpson College on Saturday, November 23 in Indianola, Iowa. While the Oles were only down by 10 points at the halftime break, they were unable to stop Simpson's scoring abilities and lost 90-58. The Storm shot 58% from the field and 50% from the three point line in the second half, connecting on 4-8 attempts in comparison to the Oles' second half shooting percentage of 33%. The Oles had a slight edge in the rebound category 40 to 35, however Simpson College won the turnover battle and was able to score 28 points off St. Olaf mistakes. The Oles managed only 10 points off Simpson turnovers.

Leading scorer for the Oles was Sara Erickson (Sr, Cambridge, Minn.) with 11 points, and point guard Kelly Sweeney (Jr, Oakdale, Minn.) added 8 points in her first game back since an ACL injury prevented her from participating during the entire '01-02 season. The Oles were led on the boards with 6 rebounds from Jill Johnson (Jr., Butterfield, Minn.) High scorer for the Storm was Annika Gustafson with 12 points.

After the game, Coach Buresh commented, "I thought we did some nice things in the first half, and this game gives us something to build on." The Oles will take lessons learned from their first contest to their next non-conference match-up against Luther College on Tuesday, November 26 at 7:00 in Decorah, IA. The Oles open the conference season at home against Concordia College on Saturday, November 30 at 1:00 in Skoglund Center.
