Oles lose in overtime to UW-Steven's Point

On Wednesday, November 27, the Oles traveled to Steven's Point for a pre-Thanksgiving match up against the UW-Steven's Point Pointers. The Oles went into the game knowing it was going to be a tough battle against the nationally ranked Pointers. However, the Oles put forth a tremendous effort. The first period was huge for the Ole defense. With strong efforts from defenders Sarah Ray (Jr, St. Paul, Minn.) and Lindsay Weier (Fr, Menomonie, Wis.) the Oles kept the game scoreless. The Oles had 3 shots on goal, while keeping the Pointers? 11 shots out of the net. The second period was also another great defensive effort by the Oles. Goaltender Andrea Smith (So, Burnsville, Minn.) stopped all 17 of the Pointers' shots on goal. The Oles high level of play paid off at 7:02 in the second period when Erin Baxter (So, Rosemount, Minn.) scored with an assist from Kate Barnett (So, Burnsville, Minn.). The Oles head off to the locker room after the second period leading the Pointers 1-0. After shutting out the Pointers for two periods, Steven's Point tied the game fifteen seconds into the third period. However, the Oles answered back with a goal at 3:53. Britny Schultheis (So, Shoreview, Minn.) scored with the assist from Baxter. Less than five minutes later, the Oles scored again increasing their lead to two. Barnett had the goal with the assist from Kirsten Paulson (Fr, Moorhead, Minn.). The Pointers picked up their game in the second half of the third period, putting many shots on goal. At 10:34 in the third period, the Pointers scored, bringing the score to 3-2. In a final attempt to tie the game, Steven's Point pulled their goaltender for a 6 on 5 advantage. With six seconds left in the game, the Pointers scored to tie the game at 3-3 and send it into overtime. With five minutes of OT to play, the Oles were tired after facing 50 shots on goal. However, the Oles put forth a strong effort in overtime. At 2:30, the Pointers scored the game-winning goal, ending with a final score of 4-3. Even though the Oles were disappointed with their loss, they put forth a tremendous effort, especially going in as an underdog. Smith had an outstanding game with a total of 51 saves. The Oles next face the College of St. Benedicts on Saturday, December 9 at 2pm at the Northfield Ice Arena.
