Oles finish 2002 Fastpitch Season
May 8, 2002
The St. Olaf College fastpitch team ended their season on Saturday, May 4, 2002 at Mabel Shirley field against Hamline University. The Oles finished 5-19 in the MIAC and 10-28 overall.
St. Olaf got off to a good start on their spring break trip in Florida where they went 5-3 and played well. However, upon returning to Minnesota, the Oles could only match their spring break win record. The Oles accumulated only five wins in their next twenty games.
Conference powerhouse St. Thomas is the MIAC champion with only one loss, followed by St. Mary's who went 16-6 in the conference. The Oles finished in 10th place in the MIAC above Macalester, who they swept earlier in the season.
The team was led on the mound by pitchers Melissa Ohm (So., Rochester, Minn.) and Grete Christenson (Sr., Springfield, Va.). In the hitting category, Kelly Frederick (Jr., Woodland, Minn) batted .295 with 31 hits for the Oles. The team was plagued with injuries throughout the season as outfielders Kendra Rick and Sarah Herby both went down with knee injuries.
The Oles will lose two seniors to graduation in 2001 All-MIAC Carrie Cooley (Villard, Minn.) and three year starting pitcher Grete Christenson. With only three freshman on this year's squad, the team is looking forward to a large recruiting class for 2003.
