Women's Soccer Drops First Conference Game to Macalester 3-0

October 4, 2001

It was a day of uncertain weather and the St. Olaf women?s soccer team seemed to be adversely effected by the unpredictability. The home game versus Macalester College started with a light rain falling, which tapered off shortly into the first half. Unfortunately, the Oles were unable to pick up their play with the change in weather. Towards the middle of the first half Macalester scored their only goal of the half. The score was preceded by a collision that left Ole keeper Elizabeth Brandell (So, Apple Valley, Minn.) reeling. After a few minutes break in play that was used to administer first aid to Brandell?s face, she returned to the field to finish the game. The Oles went into halftime trailing 1-0.

St. Olaf came out with higher energy the second half but neither team was able to score again until the last 20 minutes. Then it was Macalester that headed the ball into the back of the net off of a corner kick. The final goal came off of a misplay by the keeper and and easy touch into the net. The final score was 3-0 in favor of Macalester handing the Oles their first conference loss of the season. The Oles took only three shots while the Scots took nine. Injured keeper, Brandell, ended the game with eight saves while the Macalester keeper only totaled three. A trip to the doctor after the game informed Brandell that she would not be taking the field again until Thursday, October 11th. This leaves the Oles without a starting keeper for a week filled with tough conference and non-conference challenges. Jillian Helseth (Jr, Hartford, SD) will be taking Brandell?s place in the net until her mouth and teeth have healed enough for her to safely return.

The loss brings the Oles to 3-1 in conference play and 6-2 overall. Their next game is also a tough conference opponent. The Oles take Melby Field again at 4:00pm on Friday, October 5 against Gustavus Adolphus College.
