Mens Soccer Falls to Macalester 3-1
October 5, 2001
On Wednesday, October 3 the St. Olaf men?s soccer team traveled to St. Paul to take on conference rival Macalester College. The Oles entered the contest with a record of 4-3-1, 2-0-1 in the MIAC. The Scots entered the match one point ahead of the Oles with a 3-0 record in the MIAC.
In the first half the Oles looked out of sort giving up multiple chances and playing too many long balls with no purpose. The Oles kept Macalester off the board until late in the half when two Ole defensemen slipped on the same play leaving Macalester with an open shot on goalkeeper Ross MacMullan (Sr., Birchwood, Minn.). The Oles entered halftime down 1-0.
In the second half, the Oles came out a different team. Unfortunately, St. Olaf conceded an early own goal off of a corner kick. Facing a 2-0 deficit, the Oles controlled more of the game and started to create chances for themselves. The team broke through midway through the second half when Ben Clymer (Jr., Hudson, Wis.) slotted a ball past the Macalester keeper from a through ball by Kully Nelson (Sr., White Bear Lake, Minn.). The Oles fought hard still being a goal down, and had a couple of dangerous chances, which could have, drawn the Oles to an even score. With St. Olaf pushing hard offensively, Macalester crushed an Ole comeback with a direct free kick goal very late in the game.
The 3-1 loss moves the Oles record to 4-4-1, 2-1-1 in the MIAC. The next action is at 1:00 pm on Saturday, October 6 when they travel to St. Peter to take on defending conference champions Gustavus. The Oles next home contest is at 4:00 pm on Monday, October 8 when they take on non-conference opponent Simpson College at Rolf Mellby Field on the campus of St. Olaf College.
