St.Olaf Mens Golf Team Ends Season at MIAC Campionships
October 9, 2001
Day one showed sunny and warm, but extremely windy weather at Bunker Hills Golf Club. Sophomore Brandt Uthus (Minot, ND) showed promise once again leading the Oles with a strong opening round of 81. Junior Erik Polzin (Bloomington, Minn.) followed with a solid 82. Sophomore Pat Gilles (Madison, Wis.) and senior Brian Odlaug (Maplewood, Minn.) both had strong opening rounds of 85 each. Sophomore Todd Dulin (Orono, Minn.) struggled with the wind and shot a 90 on day one. The Oles tallied a team total of 333 on day one and stood in seventh place.
On day two, as seemed to be the trend for the season, play was once again postponed for an hour due below-freezing temperatures and frost. But once again, the sun came out and it turned out to be a brisk but beautiful day. Brandt Uthus led the way with a strong 79 in the final round of play for a total of 160 leading the Oles and placing him in 20th place in the MIAC conference. Sophomore Todd Dulin came back from a tough day one to shoot an 81 in the second round for a two-day total of 171 placing him in fourth on the Oles squad for the tournament. Erik Polzin and Pat Gilles both continued their consistent play both shooting an 83. Polzin?s tournament total of 166 put him in second on the Oles team for the weekend. Sophomore Pat Gilles had two-day total 168 placing him in third on the team for the tournament. Senior Brian Odlaug struggled in the final round and shot 89 for a tournament total of 174. Although Odlaug had a tough time with the Bunker Hills layout, he had a very strong season averaging rounds in the high 70s and low 80s allowing him to exchange the number one spot with two other members of the team. The Oles improved on day two with a team total of 326 and a tournament total of 659 placing them in eighth for the championships.
Although the Oles? fall season has come to an end, they will be back for their spring season. The Oles gained valuable experience this fall by having five players compete in every tournament. The team looks forward to competition this spring and will improve upon the results from this fall season.
