Womens Soccer Moves to 8-3 With Win Over St. Marys
October 10, 2001
Wet and dreary are probably the two best words to describe the contest between St. Olaf College and St. Mary?s University on Tuesday, October 9. Even with an early start and a shortened half time, players and spectators alike spent some quality time in the rain. The outcome, however, would be described as neither dreary nor wet from the Oles prospective with a 2-0 win.
Just moments after kickoff, St. Mary?s had a decent look at the goal but less than two minutes later at the 2:06 mark, the Oles put one in the back of the net. Brie Messick (So, Hastings, Minn.) sent a cross in from the right corner. The ball ricocheted off of a St. Mary?s player and then Kerry Goldman (Jr, Plymouth, Minn.) scored her first goal of the season by attacking the loose ball and placing it just out of the reach of the keeper. Carolyn Detjen (Jr., Juneau, AK.) was credited with the assist. At the 11:36 mark, Messick completed the scoring for the game. Goldman was involved again, this time with an assist. She fought her way to the goal line and then was able to pass the ball back across the box to a wide open Messick who finished it easily past the keeper. The first half ended reflecting the final game score of 2-0.
The Oles out shot St. Mary?s 16 to 8 and generally dominated play for the entire 90 minutes. The Cardinals did show offensive pressure by having nine corner kicks to the Oles? two. Ole keeper Jillian Helseth (Jr, Hartford, SD) had two saves to the St. Mary?s keeper, Colleen O?Hearns? six. One of the Oles? saves came late in the game during a St. Mary?s offensive push. Helseth had to jump nearly to the crossbar in order to pop the ball up so she could get under it. It was a very pivotal save in achieving a second straight shutout for Helseth.
This win brings the Oles to 8-3 overall and improves their conference record to 4- 2. Their next contest is at home at 2:00 pm on Thursday, October 11 against Luther College of Iowa. This is a double header with the men?s team and the second game will follow immediately after conclusion of the women?s game.
