Ole Women Lose 3-1 to the Norse
October 12, 2001
On Thursday, October 11 the St. Olaf women?s soccer team hosted Luther College of Decorah, IA. It was an incredibly gorgeous day for soccer but the good weather was unable to boost the Oles to a victory as they fell 3-1.
The first two Luther goals came early in the first half at the 10:00 and 12:26 minute marks. Both goals were a result of defensive breakdowns for the Oles. The Oles only had a limited amount of real opportunities to score and were unable to tally a goal in the first half. The Oles headed into halftime trailing 2-0.
The second half was much better for the Oles though it was not a big enough to overtake the deficit. At the 75:00 minute mark, a first year combination put the Oles on the board for the first and only time for the game. The pass from center midfielder Sarah Cornell (FY, Minnetonka, Minn.) found a very open Emily Klamm (FY, Mt. Prospect, Ill.). Klamm took a touch and then placed the shot perfectly into the right upper corner of the goal just past the Luther keeper. Unfortunately, Luther was able to recover quickly and at the 89:30 mark, they found the back of the net once more. The Oles were out shot 19 to 5 for the game and Luther had 12 corner kicks to the Oles 4. The Ole keeper, Jillian Helseth (Jr, Hartford, SD), totaled 10 saves and the Luther keeper earned only 4.
This loss brings the Oles to 8-4 overall and leaves their conference record unchanged at 4-2. Their next game is against MIAC leader St. Thomas University at 1:00pm on Saturday, October 13th in St. Paul.
