Mens Cross Country Finish 9th at LaCrosse
October 15, 2001
The Ole cross country team raced to a respectable ninth place finish at the Jim Drews Invite on Saturday in LaCrosse, Wis. A light drizzle, muddied surface, and hilly terrain assured the black and gold harriers a challenging obstacle in the competitive field of thirty-three teams. Amongst the teams in the race included Division I powerhouse UW-Madison, Division III top-ranked UW-LaCrosse and second ranked UW-Oshkosh.
With over 550 runners registered, meet organizers split the competition into two races, the Maroon (varsity) and Grey (jayvee) races. In the Maroon 8k, Andrew Cole (Sr, North Mankato, Minn) led the Oles with his 29th place finish. Kelly Fulton (Fy, Billings, Mont.) continued his sensational first year campaign, crossing the line in 50th. Rob Hillard (Jr, Columbia, Miss.) chased Fulton and finished four seconds behind in 54th. Mark Sullivan (West Bend, Wis.) ran fourth for the Oles with his 72nd place finish. Sullivan was followed by Malcolm Richards (Fy, Minneapolis, Minn.), Christopher Coffey (Jr, Dubuqe, Iowa), and Peder Arneson (So, Montevideo, Minn.) who finished within fifteen seconds of one another.
A pack of three Badger runners raked in the top three places but were followed closely by LaCrosse's Tyler Foos and St. Thomas' Brian Preus. The Oles finished one place behind UW-Eau Claire but one hundred and fifty-seven places behind conference rival St. Thomas.
The black and gold harriers will rest this upcoming weekend but will compete at the MIAC Championships at 2:30 on Saturday, October 27 at Como Park in Minneapolis.
