Oles Lose to League Leading Tommies 4-0
October 15, 2001
Another cold, rainy day greeted the St. Olaf women?s soccer team on Saturday, October 13 as they traveled to St. Paul to take on the MIAC leading Tommies of St. Thomas. The Tommies overcame the dreariness with a 4-0 victory.
In the 13th minute, the Tommies scored on a beautiful shot from the eighteen that had everyone fooled into thinking it was headed out of bounds. Instead it nicked the inside of the far post and ricocheted into the goal. In the 23rd minute St.Thomas added another goal, this one a result of a communication problem within the St. Olaf defense. The Oles went into halftime trailing 2-0.
The second half was similar to the first. This time St. Thomas scored in the 51st and 71st minutes. The Oles could not muster a goal for the entire game. The game ended with the Tommies out shooting the Oles 24 to 12. Neither team had many opportunities from the corner with the Oles taking one corner kick and the Tommies taking two. Elizabeth Brandell (So, Apple Valley, Minn.) recorded 14 saves for the Oles on her first game back after a mouth injury. The St. Thomas keeper had eight saves and the shutout.
This loss brings the Oles to 4-3 in conference and 8-5 overall. Their next game will be played under the lights at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, October 16, at Augsburg College in Minneapolis.
