Ole volleyball wins 3-0 over the Auggies

Three players scored double-doubles in kills and digs, leading St. Olaf College to a three-game sweep of Augsburg College in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball match Wednesday night at Augsburg. Game scores were 30-21, 30-27, and 30-20.

In a match that lasted just one hour, 10 minutes, the Oles cruised to the easy win to improve to 17-1 overall, 9-1 in the MIAC. Shannah Olson (Jr., Elk River, Minn.) led the Oles with 12 kills and 13 digs, while Veronica Cherne (Fr.,Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) had 12 kills and 12 digs, and Nicole Trnka (Sr., Morristown, Minn./Bethlehem Academy HS) had 11 kills and 11 digs. All three players hit above .300 in attack percentage, with Trnka hitting .321 and Olson and Cherne hitting .320. As a team, the Oles hit .289 (53 kills, 18 errors in 121 chances).

On the other side of the net, Augsburg struggled with errors and missed opportunities, hitting just .088 as a team (27 kills, 18 errors in 102 chances) and committing 11 service errors, eight receiving errors and a block error.

Cherne had six of her kills in the first game, as the Oles pulled away from a 12-12 game with a 9-3 scoring run down the stretch. Olson had nine kills in the second game, hitting .500. She had five kills in the Oles' final eight points of the second frame. Trnka dominated the third game, with seven kills and a .462 attack percentage. She also closed the game strong, notching the final four points of the game on kills.

Brie Mattson (Jr., Anoka, Minn.) had 41 assists and eight digs, Emily Ganzlow-Wold (Jr., Madison, Wis./Madison West HS) had nine kills and Andrea Cuff (So., Seattle, Wash./Bellevue Christian Academy) had three service aces.

St. Olaf competes in the St. Benedict Classic on Friday and Saturday October 19-20. The Oles are at home next Wednesday, October 24, at 7:30 pm hosting Carleton College for the last home contest of the regular season.
