On Wednesday, October 17 the St. Olaf men?s soccer team traveled to Collegeville to take on conference opponent Saint John?s University. The Oles entered the contest with a 5-7-1 overall record (3-2-1 in the MIAC).

In the first half both teams had opportunities, but no scoring occurred. At halftime the game was a 0-0 draw.

The second half proved to be entertaining for the fans with a barrage of goals. The Oles took the lead after Gaute Johnsen (Jr., Akershus, Norway) slotted the ball past the Johnny keeper. The assist went to Eric Steege (So., Madison, Wis.). St. John?s would come back and score three goals to give them a commanding 3-1 lead. With their backs against the wall, the Oles fought back. The St. Olaf drew to within one goal when Ben Clymer (Jr., Hudson, Wis.) received a through ball from Kyle Swanson (Sr., Cottage Grove, Minn.) and shot the ball past the Johnny keeper. Late in the half, the Oles drew even with Saint John?s when Erlend Johnsen (Jr., Akershus, Norway) scored off of a rebound from a Swanson penalty kick. Following his goal, Erlend Johnsen was ejected from the game for taunting. The Oles would play a man down for the remainder of the game. Regulation play ended in a 3-3 draw.

Saint John?s scored the game winner halfway through the first overtime after a missed clearance from the defense. The 4-3 loss moves the Oles overall record to 5-8-1 (3-3-1 in the MIAC).

The Oles will next be in action at home at 1:00 pm on Saturday, October 20 when they host highly rated, non-conference opponent Nebraska Wesleyan.
