Ole women finish second at UMN 5K Invite

October 22, 2001

Reaching within the strength and depth of the St. Olaf women?s cross-country team, the Oles finished second overall this past weekend at the UMN 5K Invite.

Proving that the Oles will be tough in next weekend?s MIAC conference meet, the women were lead by senior co-captain, Brigid Franey (Lexington, KY). Franey completed the course in 19:18 to finish first in the team scores, and second overall. The toughness of Franey encouraged the other Oles to continue racing hard at the second to last meet of the season. The remaining top seven runners for St. Olaf finished in typical Ole style, great pack running. Sophomores Kjersten Johnson (Stevens Point, Wis.) and Britt Carlson (Stillwater, Minn.) finished11th and 12th, respectively. Their high placing finish lends proof to the depth of this young squad. Completing the top pack, Kate Boeding (Sr., Poisville, Iowa), Erica Clausen (FY, Wheaton, Ill.), Allison Hales (Sr., Glenview, Ill.), and Berit Nelson (FY, St. Paul, Minn.) brought in the 16th through19th places. Many of the other Ole women raced the same course only shorter, running a 4K in an unofficial race. Each woman showed how her weeks of training have paid off as they used this race as a springboard for the conference meet next weekend.

The St. Olaf women will wrap up conference competition as they compete at the MIAC Championships at 2:00 PM, Saturday, October 27, at Como Park in St. Paul.
