Women's Soccer Drops Two Over Weekend
October 24, 2001
The St. Olaf women?s soccer team managed to break their scoreless streak over the weekend but was unable to squeak out any wins. On Saturday, October 20 they took on Nebraska Wesleyan and on Sunday the 21st they made up the postponed game against Saint Benedict. The Oles fell 2-1 to Nebraska and 2-0 to Saint Benedict.
Prior to the Nebraska game, the Oles had only scored once in their last 5 games. The Oles were able to put one on the scoreboard but not until after Nebraska put in two of their own. The game was evenly played for the first half resulting in a 0-0 score at the half.
Then in the 54th and 67th minutes, Nebraska scored leaving the Oles to play catch-up. For the last twenty minutes of the game, the St. Olaf struggled valiantly to even up the score. With just seven minutes left to play, Sarah Cornell (FY, Minnetonka, Minn.) brought the Oles to within one goal. She received a pass from Kristi Parks (So, Plymouth, Minn.) just inside the penalty box and drove it firmly into the back of the net. Just minutes before the final whistle the Oles had another excellent scoring opportunity off of a crossed ball that was headed beautifully. The Nebraska keeper, however, made a terrific grab, which kept the Oles from completing their come back. St. Olaf took 18 shots while Nebraska only took four. Ole keeper Elizabeth Brandell (So, Apple Valley, Minn.) had just one save meanwhile Nebraska?s keeper was kept busy with 12.
Within less than 24 hours after playing Nebraska Weslyan, St. Olaf took the field to compete against Saint Benedict. A slow start by the Oles gave St. Ben?s an opportunity to score twice in the first 13 minutes. After that the Oles were once again playing catch-up. St. Olaf midfielder, Jill Gauger (Jr, Bloomington, Minn.), did manage to place a shot perfectly over the St. Ben?s keeper from the left sideline, however the goal was discounted due to an offside penalty. The Oles had five shots while St. Ben?s more than doubled that with 19 shots. Brandell had six saves and the St. Ben?s keeper had only three.
The losses bring the St. Olaf to 8-8 overall and 4-5 in MIAC play. The Oles will take on cross-town rival Carleton at 3:30 PM on Wednesday, October 24th at Carleton College.
