On Saturday, October 20 the St. Olaf men?s soccer team hosted highly ranked, non-conference opponent Nebraska Wesleyan. Entering the match at 5-8-1, the Oles looked to rebound from a four game losing streak.

The Oles started strong in the first half controlling much of the game. They broke through at the 24:03 mark of the first half when Kyle Swanson (Sr., Cottage Grove, Minn.) found Ben Clymer (Jr., Hudson, Wis.) in front of the Nebraska Wesleyan goal. Clymer placed the ball past the keeper. The Oles lead lasted until 38:43 when Nebraska Wesleyan tied the score at 1-1.

At the beginning of the second half, Nebraska Wesleyan had a barrage of shots and near scoring opportunities. Ole goalkeeper, Ross MacMullan (Sr., Birchwood, Minn.) came up with some huge saves to keep the game tied at 1-1. The turning point in the game came at 71:07 when Nebraska Wesleyan was awarded a penalty kick when Brian Smith (Sr., Fort Calhoun, Neb.) stopped a goal with his arm along the goal line. Nebraska Wesleyan converted the penalty, and Smith was ejected from the game. St. Olaf would have to play the rest of the match a man down. The Oles pushed hard late in the half, but could not come up with the equalizer. The game ended in a 2-1 loss for the Oles.

The loss moves the Oles overall record to 5-9-1 with three games remaining. The Oles are next in action at 3:30 PM on Thursday, October 25 when they host conference opponent Augsburg College.
