Oles win fourth straight MIAC Championship
October 29, 2001
The St. Olaf women?s cross country team repeated as MIAC Champions at St. Paul?s Como Golf Course on Saturday, October 27. Led by individual champion Megan Daymont (Jr., Northfield, Minn.) and fourth-place finisher Brigid Franey (Sr., Lexington, Ky), the Oles scored 72 points to edge runner-up Gustavus and Carleton. Daymont ran 18:28.7 for the 5,000-meter course to top defending individual champ Kelly Farris of St. Thomas by seven seconds.
Using the energy and adrenaline of one another, the Ole women knew what needed to be done to prove that their four-time conference title was within reach. Racing as a champion to lead the Oles, co-captain Daymont set the pace early and became the first MIAC champion from St. Olaf since 1993. Co-captain Franey crossed the line with a time of 18:52. The fluid pack running of Franey and Daymont elevated St. Olaf within the top ten, but the other top seven runners ran the race need to become the champions. Sonja Bostrom (Sr, St. Paul, Minn.) finished in 11th place and was closely followed by Marit Grorud (So, Fremont, Nebr.) who finished in 22nd. Completing the top ten runners for St. Olaf were Kjersten Johnson (So, Stevens Point, Wis.) in 34th place, Britt Carlson (So, Stillwater, Minn.) in 41st place, Kate Boeding (Sr, Potsville, Iowa) in 58th place, and Rachel Pederson (Jr, Sioux Falls, SD), Erica Clausen (So, Wheaton, IL), and co-captain Allison Hales (Sr, Glenview, IL) finished in the top 105 runners. Though the season concluded for many Ole runners at the MIAC meet, the top ten runners for St. Olaf will race at the NCAA Regional Championship at 12:00 PM on November 10th in Grinnell, Iowa
