Mens cross-country takes fourth at MIAC Championships
October 30, 2001
The Oles paced over a multi-looped Como Park course to finish fourth at the highly competitive MIAC Championships on Saturday. The black and gold harriers finished a mere point behind third place St. John's and only thirteen points in back of second place Hamline.
St. Thomas placed six runners in the top fifteen to post one of the lowest scorers in race history to easily defend their title. Brian Preus and Nick Maddux broke away from the field to claim the individual and runner-up titles for the Division III seventh ranked Tommies.
Three Ole runners finished in the top fifteen to claim All-Conference status. Andrew Cole (Sr, North Mankato, Minn) led the attack with his sixth place finish. Robert Hillard (Jr, Columbia, Mo.) and Peder Arneson (So, Montevideo, Minn) followed Cole and hit the shoot in 12th and 13th places.
Christopher Coffey (Jr, Dubuque, Iowa), the lone Ole All-Conference performer from last years' meet, crossed the line in 19th to claim honorable mention status. Malcolm Richards (Fy, Minneapolis, Minn) maintained his composure after losing a shoe early in the race, and rounded out the varsity scoring with his 29th place finish.
Josh Steffens (Sr, Lake Geneva, Wis) paced the course to finish in 43rd as the Oles sixth runner. He was followed by a hoard of harriers including Mark Sullivan (Jr, West Bend, Wis), Joel Tortomasi (Jr, Beloit, Wis), Mark Murakami (Sr, Chicago, IL), and Tobiah Bingham (So, Great Barrington, MA).
The top nine Ole runners will rest this upcoming weekend before traveling to compete at the NCAA Central Region Meet in Grinnell, IA on Saturday, November. 10. The top three teams will receive bids to the national championship meet in Rock Island, IL on Saturday, Nov. 17. The remaining Oles will conclude their season at the Karhu Shoe Race against cross-town rival Carleton, at 4:30 on November 1.
