Oles women soccer lose close battle to Knights
October 25, 2001
Every year when the Knights of Carleton and the Oles of St. Olaf meet, it is the pinnacle of the season. No matter what has happened up until that point, each teams wants this win more than any other all season long. The game determines who has the pride of Northfield. This year Carleton gets that pride but like every year before, it was a game that came down to the wire and each team left all they had out on the field.
The game started at a hard quick pace, which both teams had anticipated. At the 20-minute mark, the Knights found the back of the net. The rest of the half the Oles spent trying to play catch up. Though they created several opportunities for themselves, the halftime score was 1-0 in favor of Carleton.
The beginning of the second half went much like the end of the first. The Oles continued to push and were able to ward off any threats made by the Knights. In the 76th minute, with time slipping quickly away, the Oles managed to score their only goal of the game. Brianne Messick (So, Hastings, Minn.) got the ball on a breakaway and was able to finish just past the Carleton keeper. Kristi Parks (So, Plymouth, Minn.) was credited with the assist. The Oles held Carleton off for the next six minutes. Then in the 83rd minute, with just seven minutes left in the game, Carleton managed to pull ahead again. The goal for the Knights came with just enough time for the Oles not to be able to retaliate. The game ended with a score of 2-1 in favor of Carleton. Carleton had 19 shots to the five taken by St. Olaf. The Knights also put up bigger numbers from corner kicks, taking eight to the Oles six. Ole keeper Elizabeth Brandell (So, Apple Valley, Minn.) had five saves while the Carleton keeper had only two.
This loss puts the Oles at 8-9 overall and 4-6 in the conference. They play their last contest of the season on October 27th at 1:00pm at home against the College of St. Catherine.
