Oles Sweep Johnnies
May 3, 2001
Rain and gloomy skies hovered over Mark Almli Field and threatened to keep St. Olaf from playing, but in the end, the Oles used quality pitching and timely hitting en route to their sweep over the St. John's Johnnies.
In the opener, the Oles were anchored by strong pitching from Aaron Koppen (Jr., Pine City, Minn.) and a three-run homer from Nick Beissel (Sr., Lakeville, Minn.) as they defeated the Johnnies 8-5.
In the second game, the Oles received their only runs in the first inning off a two-run homer from Dan LaManna (Jr., South St. Paul, Minn.) and held on for a 2-0 victory. Starting pitcher Charlie Ruud (Fy., Cannon Falls, Minn.) threw a two-hit shutout for his sixth win of the year.
With the two wins, the Oles improved their overall record to 23-7 and 14-2 in conference play. The sweep over the Johnnies also clinched a playoff berth for the Oles in the MIAC tournament to be played in Dundas from May 11-13. The Oles will play host to Concordia College on Saturday in a doubleheader starting at 1:00 at Mark Almli Field.
