Ole Fastpitch Sweeps Cobbers
May 5, 2001
The St. Olaf College fastpitch team swept the Concordia College Cobbers in a doubleheader in Moorhead on May 4. The Oles pulled ahead in the first inning with four runs and went on to win the game 7-2. In the second game, the Oles took the lead in the fourth inning and triumphed over the Cobbers 4-2. The Oles were led by Carrie Cooley (Jr., Villard, Minn.), who went 5-6 with two doubles and three singles. The Oles received strong pitching performances from junior Grete Christenson (Springfield, Va.) and first-year Melissa Ohm (Elgin, Minn.), along with solid defense.
With no outs and the bases loaded in the first inning of game one, sophomore Kelly Frederick's (Minnetonka, Minn.) two-run single scored seniors Sarah Cherry (Faribault, Minn.) and Christy Boraas (Madison, Minn.). Taking advantage of two Cobber passed balls, Cooley and Frederick also scored in the first with the Oles taking a commanding lead in their first at bat. In the second inning, a single by Andrea Hatleli (Sr., Austin, Minn.) and two base hits by Cherry and Cooley, led Hatleli to score. Also in the second inning, the Cobbers' Heather Stohs scored off a single by Jill Flatau. The Oles picked up two additional runs in the top of the fourth with RBIs from Cooley and Frederick, who each had three RBIs for the day. The Cobbers scored their other run in the bottom of the fifth, but the Oles held and went on to win 7-2. Christenson threw a complete game and struck out three.
The second game was scoreless until the fifth inning. Cooley started the inning with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Kirsten Haaland (Billings, Mt.). Molly Robinson (So., Northfield, Minn.) doubled and was driven in by centerfielder Kendra Rick (So., Apple Valley, Minn.). The Oles also scored in the fifth on a double by Cooley. The Cobbers battled back scoring two in the bottom of the fifth. The Oles increased their lead in the seventh with a single from Cooley and excellent base running by first-year Sarah Herby (Richfield, Minn.). The Oles held the Cobbers to two runs with superb pitching from Ohm and a great close by Christenson.
The two wins move St. Olaf to 6-13-1 in the MIAC, 10-21-1 overall. The Cobbers stand at 10-12-0 overall, 7-11-0 in league play. The Oles close their season at cross-town rival Carleton College on May 5th at 1:00. Concordia has two doubleheaders remaining; on May 5th, a home series against St. Benedict and on May 7th, a series at St.Catherine.
