NORTHFIELD, Minn. ? St. Olaf College?s Norseman Band will perform its final concert of the year on Saturday, May 5, at the college.

The concert, free and open to the public, will be at 7:30 p.m. in Boe Memorial Chapel.

The event will feature selections performed during the Lenten season, as well as a range of other concert repertoire choices. A range of musical emotions and textures will be expressed in "Ballet Sacra" by David Holsinger, "Poem" by John Frantzen and "Faith" by Andrew Boysen. The percussion section will be featured prominently in several works.

In April the Norseman Band presented concerts in South Dakota, and shared a concert in Bloomington with the Minnesota Symphonic Winds. Last week the ensemble played an outdoor performance on Northfield?s Bridge Square as a part of the inaugural celebration for new St. Olaf President Christopher Thomforde.

The Norseman Band regularly performs modern pieces for concert band, as well as marches and traditional repertoire. The band strives to program for a wide audience, including young listeners.

Last year the band was featured at the Minnesota Music Educators? midwinter conference in Minneapolis, and performed for the visit of Estonian President Lennart Meri to St. Olaf.

The band performs often on the St. Olaf campus and tours each spring to sites in the Upper Midwest, including Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan, as well as Canada. In a normal academic year the band presents four or five concerts, often with student soloists, conductors and composers. The band?s membership reflects the broad spectrum of academic interests and geographical diversity of the St. Olaf student body.

The Norseman Band has produced CD recordings and has broadcast live on 89.3 WCAL several times each year.
