St. Olaf Women's Tennis Third in MIAC
May 8, 2001
The St. Olaf women's tennis team competed in the MIAC conference tournament over the weekend, to finish in third place, with an overall record of 13-5. Gustavus Adolphus and the University of St. Thomas took first and second, respectively.
Great tennis was played dispite the changes in weather from the wind and sunshine to overcast and raining. In singles, five out of six Oles made it to the semi-finals, and No. 2 singles player Janelle Sagress (Jr., Mankato, Minn.) made it to the final round taking an overall second place, being defeated by Gustavus 3-6, 2-6.
The Oles also put on a good show in the doubles bracket. The senior No. 1 doubles team of Rebekah Van Wieren (Holland, Mich.) and Alyssa Derksen (Appleton, Wis) took home the consolation championship defeating St. Mary's 8-4. The No. 2 team of Yvonne Yang (So., Appleton, Wis.) and Janelle Sagness (So., Mankato, Minn.) and No. 3 team of Bethany Kochsiek (Jr., La Crosse, Wis.) and Lindsay Gorham (Jr., Wenatchee, Wis.) played tough, both ending their seasons with play in the semi-finals.
