NORTHFIELD, Minn. ? Two St. Olaf College juniors have been awarded the college?s annual Gordon Allport Psychology Award.

Zachary Olson of Clearbrook, Minn., and Megan Call of Logan, Utah, each received a cash award and a certificate of achievement from St. Olaf psychology professor emeritus Olaf Millert at a recent banquet.

Olson is majoring in psychology and social work with a concentration in neuroscience. After graduation he intends to study for a master?s degree in social work, with an emphasis on health and mental health, at the University of Washington-Seattle or the University of Chicago. He plans to be a clinical social worker, serving people who are mentally ill, chemically dependent or homeless.

In the last three years he has worked with children who have severe emotional disturbances, with people who have developmental disabilities, and with adults who have severe, persistent mental illness. He also has done volunteer work with the Northfield Head Start program and with homeless shelters in Minneapolis and Bemidji.

Call is a psychology major with a biomedical concentration. After graduation she plans to attend graduate school to study health psychology or child therapy.

This fall she will participate in the college?s Global Semester international studies program. Call is a member of the St. Olaf women?s track team and a junior captain of the cross-country team, and was named to the Academic All-America cross-country team. She volunteers with the Northfield Head Start program and is treasurer of the St. Olaf Habitat for Humanity chapter.

The Allport Award was founded by former St. Olaf psychology faculty member Millert and his wife Juta, in memory of Gordon Allport?s contributions to psychology. Allport was a Harvard scholar and an expert witness in the landmark U.S. Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of Education.
