Womens Track and Field Fifth at MIAC Championships

The St. Olaf women's track and field team placed fifth with 70.5 points this past weekend at the MIAC Championship meet held at Carleton College. The University of St. Thomas won the meet scoring 183.5 with Concordia close behind. Senior co-captain Janet Hengel (Sartell, Minn.) was the only individual champion for the Oles winning the pole vault with a leap of 11'2.5".

The distance crew had a great meet. Junior Brigid Franey (Lexington, Ky.) placed fourth in the 500 meter run (18:25.77) and sixth in the 3000 meter (10:56.99) and 10,000 meter (39:28.60) events. Senior co-captain Anne Sateren (Minneapolis, Minn.) placed fifth in the 3,000 meter run (10:49.51) as well as in the 5,000 (18:27.42). Senior Suzanne DePaulo (St. Louis Park, Minn.) finished in seventh in the 10,000 and eighth in the 5,000 with times of 39:46.89 and 19:06.67 respectively.

Sophomore Megan Daymont (Northfield, Minn.) placed in both the 800 and 1500 finishing in 5th and 6th place. Senior Margie Tilman (St. Louis Park, Minn.) finished in seventh in the 1500 with a time of 4:53.52. First year Marit Grorud (Fremont, Neb.) finished in 8th place in the 400 meter dash (61.11). First-year Becky Peterson (Plymouth, Minn.) had an outstanding meet, placing fifth in the 100 meter hurdles (16.15), eighth in the 200 meter dash (27.14) and sixth in the heptathlon. Sophomore Lisa Eidenschink (Detroit Lakes, Minn.) finished fourth in the discus with a toss of 129'1" with first-year Jen Levenhagen (Appleton, Wis.) finishing in seventh with a toss of 124'1". Sophomore Leah Dvorak (Elma, Iowa) placed fourth in the high jump with a leap of 5'.25". The 4x800 meter relay of Grorud, first-year Abby Love (Appleton, Wis.), Tilman and Daymont finished in third with a time of 9:36.79. The 4x100 meter relay of first-year Kelly Spitzely (St. Paul, Minn.), Peterson, senior co-captain Sara Daymont (Northfield, Minn.) and Hengel finished in sixth with a time of 50.76. The 4x400 meter relay team of sophomore Dawn Mielke (Mounds View, Minn.), Grorud, Love and Hengel finished in 9th place.

Up next for the Oles is the NCAA Championship meet which Hengel has qualified automatically and Daymont provisionally.
