Ole Baseball receives seven All-Conference Selections

St. Olaf baseball received 7 All-Conference selections and a Co-MVP. Brian Sprout (Jr., Lake City, Minn.) was voted Co-MVP along with Jake Mauer of the University of St. Thomas. Sprout is a three-time MIAC MVP, having been selected in his first two seasons.

Along with Sprout, six other Oles were voted All-Conference. Catcher Dan LaManna (Jr., So. St. Paul, Minn.), first baseman Nick Beissel (Sr., Lakeville, Minn.), leftfielder Casey Coulson (Sr., Apple Valley, Minn.), centerfielder Steve Ryan (Jr., So. St. Paul, Minn.), pitcher Aaron Koppen (Jr., Pine City, Minn.) and pitcher Charlie Ruud (FY, Cannon Falls, Minn.). Along with the All-Conference selections, four Oles were named to the 2001 Midwest All-Region baseball team. Brian Sprout and Dan LaManna were named to the first team and Nick Beissel and Charlie Ruud were selected to the third team.

The St. Olaf Oles repeated as MIAC champions with an 18-2 record in the conference and 29-9 overall. The Oles won 12 consecutive games to close their regular season and they remained undefeated at home; they included home sweeps of St. John?s University, Concordia College and the University of St. Thomas. St. Olaf tied an MIAC record by sweeping nine conference doubleheaders in a season.

The Oles finished the regular season ranked third in the Midwest Region and 19th in the ABCA Division III poll. St. Olaf lost to the University of St. Thomas 9-2 in the championship of the MIAC tournament.
