NORTHFIELD, Minn. ? Two St. Olaf College students have been named winners of the college?s first annual Loomis Latin Translation Contest.

First prize ($350) went to Jennifer L. Brown, a senior classics major from Danville, Va., who has served as departmental Latin tutor and headed the St. Olaf College chapter of Eta Sigma Phi, the classics honor society. Brown will pursue a master?s degree in Latin and classical humanities at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst.

Second prize ($200) went to Kristina L. Alton, a junior classics and English major from Red Wing, Minn., who will be the departmental Latin tutor next academic year. Alton also is one of six students who have been awarded $1,000 Manson A. Stewart Scholarships by the Classical Association of the Middle West and South.

The endowed awards in Latin are made possible by the generosity of Kenneth and Kathleen Loomis and their son Stephen, a 1997 St. Olaf graduate who majored in Latin and mathematics.

St. Olaf College prepares students to become responsible citizens of the world, fostering development of mind, body and spirit. A four-year, coeducational liberal arts college of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), St. Olaf has a student enrollment of 2,950 and a full-time faculty complement of approximately 300. It is one of Money Guide?s top 100 "elite values in college education today," and it leads the nation?s colleges in percentage of students who study abroad.
