Playwright, screenwriter to speak at St. Olaf Monday
January 16, 2009
Playwright and screenwriter Jeffrey Hatcher has given words to three major motion pictures -- The Duchess (starring Keira Knightley and Ralph Fiennes), Casanova (starring Heath Ledger, Sienna Miller and Jeremy Irons) and Stage Beauty (starring Claire Danes, Billy Crudup and Rupert Everett) -- and on Monday, Jan. 19, he'll share his experiences with the St. Olaf community during a campus visit.

Before delivering that lecture, he will also speak to Associate Professor of English Karen Marsalek's English 124 Interim class, "Introduction to Drama."
"I was eager for students to have a chance to talk to him about his work," Marsalek says. "And since film studies is such a popular topic at St. Olaf right now, I thought others outside our class would also enjoy hearing about his experiences writing for stage and screen."
Hatcher's most recent work is a play called The Boys that is set in Dublin during the 1931 season of the Gate Theatre. It examines the relationship of Hilton Edwards, Micheal MacLiammoir and Orson Welles. Another of Hatcher's plays, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, is currently running at Park Square Theater in St. Paul.
