Science Museum president to speak on campus Thursday

Eric Jolly, president of the Science Museum of Minnesota, will speak on campus Thursday, Nov. 20, as part of an event celebrating St. Olaf College's 2008-09 academic theme, "Science and the Liberal Arts." The title of his talk, which will begin at 11:30 a.m. in the Buntrock Commons Sun Ballroom, will be "STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) as an Essential Literacy for a Healthy Society."

Jolly earned a B.A. in psychology from the University of Rhode Island and an M.S. and Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Oklahoma. Prior to taking his position at the Science Museum in 2004, he was senior scientist and vice president for the Education Development Center in Newton, Mass.

Since his appointment to the museum in 2004, Jolly has overseen steady growth in annual attendance, including the most highly attended year in the museum's history and the Twin Cities' most popular exhibit to date, Body Worlds, which had more than 750,000 visitors. He is a passionate advocate for STEM education, and he has worked to address the problem of the achievement gap in the United States education system.
