St. Olaf alumni, professors featured in local art exhibit
November 20, 2008
An exhibit featuring several current and former St. Olaf faculty members and alumni is now open at ArtOrg in Northfield and will run through Dec. 7.
The 20 artists involved in "The Twenty Views of Dundas" each chose a specific aspect of Dundas history to portray through a particular medium, and then collaborated with an art printer to create a limited quantity of hand-pulled sets of prints. Two examples of mediums that were used in the project are lithography, where the artist's design is created on 4-inch-thick blocks of limestone, and intaglio, where copper plates are worked over in fine detail with small cutting tools and acid etches.
The goal for the artists at the onset of the project was to preserve the history of the town of Dundas and to make it accessible for future generations, all while gaining experience in printmaking. As the mission statement of ArtOrg states, "[it] strives to be an energized and inclusive arts-based organization focused on engaging the community in the visual arts through education, business partnerships, and exciting contemporary art venues." This exhibit provides an opportunity for the artists involved to gain a deeper sense of the printmaking process through their collaboration with the art printers.
"The Twenty Views of Dundas" is on display at the ArtOrg Moving Walls Gallery, located at 200 Division St. The gallery's hours for this exhibit are Thursdays and Fridays from 6-8 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 1-4 p.m. or by appointment.
