The 2009 edition of Princeton Review's annual guide, The Best 368 Colleges, gives St. Olaf College high marks for overall quality of life and a selective admissions process, noting that the college's national reputation is "sharply on the rise, a fact evidenced by a 50 percent increase in the number of applications since 2001."

The guide includes only about 15 percent of the 2,500 four-year colleges in the United States. "We chose schools for this book primarily for their outstanding academics," says Robert Franek, Princeton Review's vice president for publishing. "We evaluated them based on institutional data we collect about the schools, feedback from students attending them, and our visits to schools over the years."

Comments about St. Olaf in the two-page profile include mention of the "amazing study abroad program," "great hands-on learning" and "the broad range of academics and academic experiences."

The ranking lists in The Best 368 Colleges are based on The Princeton Review's survey of 120,000 students. The 80-question survey asked students to rate their schools on several topics and report on their campus experiences. St. Olaf ranks No. 4 in Best Campus Food, No. 8 in Town-Gown Relations are Great and No. 17 in Best Quality of Life.
