Charles McEachern '09 (l) is spending part of this summer studying mathematics in Poland, while Barry Costanzi '09 is doing summer research at St. Olaf.
Three St. Olaf physics majors have been named recipients of scholarships from the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Foundation through the Rossing Fund for Physics Education Endowment. Daniel Endean '09, who also received a scholarship last year, has been awarded $10,000. Barry Costanzi '09 and Charles McEachern '09 each will receive $5,000. Six other students at ELCA colleges also received scholarships.

The goals of the scholarship program are to encourage top physics students to attend ELCA colleges and universities (St. Olaf is one of 28 such institutions), to help ELCA schools recruit top students and to encourage students at ELCA schools to consider majoring in physics. Grants are awarded in increments of $10,000, $5,000 and $3,000.

Gifts from Thomas Rossing established the Rossing Fund for Physics Education Endowment in the ELCA Foundation in 2005. Rossing, who taught at St. Olaf for 14 years, is a professor emeritus of Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, Ill. Currently he is a guest professor of music at Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif.
