DuRocher presents, publishes, translates

In the past month, Professor of English Rich DuRocher has been busy presenting, researching and seeing his work come to fruition.

In October, DuRocher gave the keynote speech at the Conference on John Milton, an international gathering of more than 200 Milton scholars in Tennessee. His talk was on part of his current research on Milton's portrayal of emotions, which is funded by a National Endowment for the Humanities grant.

DuRocher also published essays in two collections by Duquesne University Press: one essay about Satan as a reflection of King Charles II in a volume on the First Edition of Paradise Lost, the other essay in a collection called Renaissance Ecology, a "green" reading of Renaissance literature, focusing on a study of poems by 17th century poet Anne Bradstreet, considered America's first poet.

Most recently, DuRocher's keynote address was requested for publication in essay form in the scholarly journal Milton Studies.

In addition, DuRocher recently completed his translation of correspondence, or letters, from Commentarius Rinuccinianus, the papal ambassador's report on Ireland from 1640-55 that is an eight-volume Latin work.

The Irish government funded the translation, commenting on the information this document will present on the revolutionary uprising and national formation of the country, as well as relations with England, the papacy and more. DuRocher was part of the first and only English translation of this work by an international team of scholars.

DuRocher completed translations with the help of St. Olaf classics majors Elizabeth Beerman '07 and Peter Moench '09. The translation will soon be published in Dublin, Ireland.
